Garak Market was formed in 1985 and continued as it is since the wholesale market for the agricultural and fishery products in Yongsangu moved into the current area. With mounting demands on change caused by ongoing developments in the dense residential complexes in the proximity and the Seoul southeastern area, opinion was divided on whether it should be moved somewhere else or be renovated. This plan, therefore, should recreate Garak Market as a symbolic place that can represent the Songpa district by retrieving the historical, cultural and geological traces that have disappeared. It is a step to take it to the next level as a center of logistics, commerce and culture. The urbanization plan for Garak Market under the theme of ''E.C.O. (Environment, Cultural Park,Open Flow)¡¯ aims to recreate Garak Market as a new place of communication and as a tourist attraction by combining three flows of nature, culture and logistics. The ideas were collected through the ideas competition and diverse design proposals were drawn up according to the respective design concepts. They were then further developed through the second stage design competition. As for the overall plans, the Phase I for the business sector arranges the retail facilities and business support facilities centered about a ¡®Valley¡¯ while Phases II and III adopt the U-shaped arrangements to enhance the logistics efficiency and include a rooftop park to offer an open green area to the residents
